“Snowies” Are Back: What You Need to Know About Massachusetts’ Winter Owl Visitors

Mass Audubon announced this week that Snowy Owls have returned to Massachusetts from the Arctic tundra for their annual winter stay. “Did you hear? Snowy Owls are back!” the organization proclaimed, noting that these majestic birds, also called “snowies,” travel south each winter to hunt and feed in the state’s relatively warmer climate. The owls spend their time in open areas like salt marshes, agricultural fields, and airports before returning to their Arctic breeding grounds around April.
