How a bountiful harvest derailed Saturday’s plans

We had a Saturday packed with plans. Lunch was a 21st birthday party for our son’s roommate. Then, the evening was to include supper with family and a Texas Tech University choir concert featuring my niece, who has an amazing voice.

But during lunch, the silage choppers called my farmer to let him know they were starting on one of our farms. He wasn’t expecting them until Monday. He excused himself and headed to the field. I followed suit not too long afterward — I don’t miss an opportunity for harvest photos.

My farmer picked me up on the southwest dry corner, and as we slowly drove alongside the choppers, he told me he wouldn’t be going to Lubbock. I wasn’t surprised; he doesn’t like to be far during harvest. As I listened to him and texted my brother to confirm dinner numbers, my farmer looked at me and said, “This is the best crop I’ve had in years. I just want to sit and watch it be harvested.”…
