In a compassionate outreach to support the community, nearly 1,000 frozen turkeys with accompanying side dishes were handed out to Mecklenburg County residents in need during the Saturdays on Stitt Turkey Giveaway last Saturday. This gesture was aimed at providing relief to those affected by recent SNAP disruptions and the general struggle with food insecurity, a persistent issue in the locale.
The Department of Community Resources undertook this initiative in response to ongoing challenges faced by many, even after SNAP benefits were reinstated post-government shutdown, according to a statement obtained by Mecklenburg County News. “Even though SNAP recipients have had their benefits restored, we know many are still feeling the impacts of food insecurity,” said Yulonda Griffin, Director of the department, acknowledging the extended trials faced by the populace residents were warmly welcomed by staff members, who distributed food and provided invaluable information on further resources available.
Partnerships bolstered the distribution event’s success, as the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center became a drive-thru nexus of support with aid from local food pantry Nourish Up and the grocery chain Food Lion.
