Rochester man pleads guilty in $516K check fraud scheme

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man has admitted to his role in a scheme that used stolen U.S. Mail checks to defraud banks, businesses, and individuals out of more than half a million dollars, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

26-year-old Sheldon Marquis Adams, pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to prosecutors, between March and September 29, 2023, Adams is said to have conspired with others to obtain hundreds of checks stolen from U.S. Postal Service mailboxes in the Rochester area. Adams and his co-conspirators then forged or altered the checks to withdraw funds from the associated bank accounts…
