San Diego Lifeguards Rescue Dog Swept Out to Sea Near Ocean Beach

A family vacation in San Diego changed unexpectedly on Sunday when Sadie, a five-year-old Lab mix, was swept nearly half a mile out to sea after being caught in a rip current at Ocean Beach. Sadie, who was with her owners Alexis and Brandon, left their vacation rental and traveled almost two miles before reaching Dog Beach, where strong currents pulled her into the ocean.

San Diego Fire-Rescue stated that surfers near Lifeguard Tower 2 saw the dog being swept off a jetty and notified lifeguards. Lifeguard units and a U.S. Coast Guard small boat began a search, but Sadie soon disappeared from view in the water, making the search more difficult.

After more than an hour, the search was close to ending. Two lifeguards on a rescue watercraft made a final check and saw Sadie’s snout above the surface off South Mission Beach. They rescued her, moved her to a surf boat, and brought her back to her owners at Lifeguard Headquarters…
