Macy’s in S.F.’s Union Square won’t have a Santa this year, for the first time in decades

For as long as she can remember, 8-year-old Adriana Hernandez has walked through the holiday wonderland at Macy’s in San Francisco’s Union Square and waited in line with her family to sit on Santa’s lap to tell him what she wants for Christmas.

This year, she wants a robotic turtle, but she won’t be able to tell that to Santa. Not at Macy’s anyway.

Santa’s seat at the iconic Union Square department store will be empty this year, for what appears to be the first time in about 80 years — save a pandemic absence in 2020…
