AST Blog: Arkansas Thanksgiving Snow History

Usually when people think about snow around the holidays, many automatically think about Christmas, but what about Thanksgiving? Snow on Thanksgiving in Arkansas is rare, especially in Little Rock, but it has happened before. One thing to note, the records below are only dates where snow fell on Thanksgiving day and does not include snow falling before or after Thanksgiving day.

Thanksgiving Day Snow in Little Rock

  • November 27, 1958: 0.2 inches
  • November 26, 1992: Trace
  • November 24, 1938: Trace

These are the only known cases of snow on Thanksgiving day here in Little Rock. With that said, there have been days where snow has fallen the day before Thanksgiving or during Thanksgiving week. Take November 23, 1971 for example when Little Rock picked up 4.4 inches of snow. Or November 26, 1980 when nearly 2 inches of snow fell here in Little Rock. This was enough accumulation to allow at least an inch of snow here in Little Rock on Thanksgiving day.

How Rare Is It?Thanksgiving snow in Little Rock has happened three times since 1925 (100 years), and only once with a measurable accumulation. It’s not impossible to see Thanksgiving snow in Arkansas, but history shows that is is not a common sight to see. Most years are simply too warm.
