Nevada ranchers test GPS ‘virtual fencing’ to herd cattle

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada ranchers are teaming up with University of Nevada, Reno researchers to utilize high-tech tools to manage cattle and protect fragile rangelands: virtual fencing.

The advanced system utilizes GPS-based technology, allowing ranch owners to guide herds remotely — without the need to install physical barriers, often a labor-intensive task.

The cattle wear GPS-tracking collars that emit a beep when they approach a digital boundary. If the cow crosses into a restricted zone, the collar delivers a mild pulse.
