In a recent turn of events, a high-speed chase that began in Illinois ended fatally for the driver, Shontez Campbell, 26, of Centreville. Campbell succumbed to his injuries on November 25, 2025, following the crash that happened in the early hours of November 20, as per a statement released by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).
The chase initiated when officers attempted to pull over Campbell’s vehicle, a Lincoln MKS sedan, for traffic violations and suspicion of driving under the influence; instead of stopping, Campbell fled, leading law enforcement on a pursuit across state lines, which the officers from the Washington Park, Illinois Police Department began, shortly after Sauget, Illinois Police took over the lead. It was early morning, about 3 a.m., when SLMPD officers received the alert of a car that was on fire after crashing at the intersection of 6th and Washington – the aftermath of this high-stakes pursuit that somehow ended with no other vehicles involved in the incident.
The vehicle, driven by Campbell, ultimately lost control and collided with a traffic light and a concrete structure, causing it to catch fire, and officers from SLMPD were quick to rescue him, as stated previously in their press release.
