Sheltering Silverton: From the streets to a second chance

SILVERTON, Ore. (KOIN) — This holiday season, KOIN 6 and Comcast invite the community to help local families at Sheltering Silverton, a homeless shelter that has supported the East Marion County community for more than 10 years.

At Sheltering Silverton, hope often walks through the door quietly, and sometimes it even comes back to work there. Jessica Martson and Courtney Klawuhn once found themselves at rock bottom. Today, they are employees helping others rise.

Jessica came to the shelter in January 2024, the same day she stopped using drugs. After nine months, she moved into her own apartment, and by December she was hired as a peer mentor.

She said the shelter gave her strength, self-worth, and confidence. “When I came here, something just clicked, and I said, ‘I surrender. I can’t do this anymore,’” she said…
