Riverwalk hosts annual sold-out Turkey Day Run with costume contest

The annual turkey day run at Riverwalk Park saw a bustling turnout as families gathered to burn calories before indulging in Thanksgiving feasts. The event, now in its ninth year, featured a 5k run and a one-mile walk, both of which were completely sold out. Participants began lining up at 7 a.m. to pick up their race numbers and shirts, with the run officially starting at 8 a.m.

A costume contest kicked off the festivities, with many attendees donning creative outfits. Brian and Stacy, two participants, shared their excitement for the event. “Mine was the hat. Hers was the shirts. We are both teachers, so we’re always ready to dress up,” they said. The couple opted for the 5k run, expressing their enthusiasm for the post-run treats. “A banana, but then a lot of sweet potatoes. I’m always for the pumpkin pie,” they added.

Kevin, another participant, credited his wife for their family’s themed shirts which read “Mother Pluckers” and included a turkey. “That was my wife’s idea. She came up with it,” he said. The event marked the family’s first time participating in the turkey day run, which they hope to make a tradition. “We figured, you know, why not burn some calories before we put a whole bunch in, right?” Kevin remarked…
