The homeless panhandler you may know

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — When you see a homeless person panhandling at a traffic light or pushing a stolen shopping cart loaded with their worldly possessions, the face may look familiar.

A founder of a Norfolk-based organization that helps the homeless says it appears more unhoused people are on the streets of Hampton Roads, and a growing number of them are local. Dr. Antipas Harris is the Executive Director and founder of the Urban Renewal Center in Norfolk.

“We thought we knew the homeless people in this area and we are starting to see there are a lot of folks we don’t know,” said Harris. That included 62-year-old Joel Christiansen, who is a 1981 Graduate of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach. Christiansen and his girlfriend, Holly Allen, had a thriving landscape business…
