Jason Symonds was accused of sexually assaulting and killing 5-year-old Nicole VanNoty in 1994. He was convicted and sentenced to mandatory life in prison without parole in 1995.
Symonds was 16 years old when he killed VanNoty, making him eligible for resentencing under a new law passed in Michigan a few years ago.
