Downey, CA — Two people were killed late Wednesday night in a multi-vehicle crash on the southbound 5 Freeway in Downey, authorities confirmed. The collision prompted a major traffic closure while investigators examined the scene.
Crash Details
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the crash occurred at approximately 11:37 p.m. near the Lakewood Boulevard off-ramp. Upon arrival, CHP officers found at least two heavily damaged vehicles spread across multiple lanes.
Video from the scene showed debris scattered across the freeway, with a pickup truck and a dark-colored sedan among the vehicles involved. Multiple CHP cruisers and fire engines blocked the roadway as emergency crews worked under flashing red and blue lights.
Paramedics with the Downey Fire Department pronounced two people dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
Traffic Impact
All southbound lanes of the freeway were initially closed to allow emergency personnel and Caltrans crews to secure the area with cones and flares.
