Death of the penny could cost Ohioans who pay in cash

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As pennies vanish from circulation, Ohio’s cash buyers may end up paying the price.

With no federal or state rules for rounding totals to the nearest nickel, businesses must decide whether to round everything up, round everything down, or split the difference depending on the final digit.

“It’s a mess right now, honestly,” Ohio Restaurant & Hospitality Alliance President John Barker said. “Most consumers would probably be uncomfortable rounding up without a law. But if you keep rounding down, it could end up being a pretty significant loss.”…
