Winter fashions of furs, burgundy, and leather boots are the rage, but who rolls out the runway when it’s trees getting decked out? Hotel Roanoke does. The landmark’s annual Fashions for Evergreens runs from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, showcasing more than 35 Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, schools, and organizations—done up in both wacky and traditional styles.
Visitors wander the displays and vote for their favorites with their dollars, proceeds benefitting the United Way of Roanoke Valley. “The event has really become the centerpiece of our holiday celebrations,” says Michael Quonce, hotel spokesperson. Drawing more than 30,000 guests annually and raising over $100,000 since its start, the display promises a heartwarming example of local holiday spirit each year, plus a few playful surprises—last year’s Barbie tree among them.
