Canton opens winter warming shelter for community

CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – The City of Canton will open a winter warming shelter on Monday, Dec. 1, due to winter weather conditions.

The warming shelter will open at St. Paul AME Church, located at 1800 Tuscarawas Street East. The shelter will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

“We owe it our most vulnerable residents to make sure they have a place to keep warm during these winter months,” Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II said in a Sunday press release. “I am grateful to all our community partners and donors who have made this venture possible.”

According to the release, guests will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Food and water will be available.

SARTA will also provide transportation to the warming shelter during operating hours. SARTA can be accessed from any regular bus stop to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Ave. Bus fare will be waived for anyone who tells the driver they are going to the warming shelter…
