Capital City Kwanzaa Festival Returns to Richmond Dec. 27

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Friends and family are invited to celebrate African American culture, unity and community pride at the 2025 Capital City Kwanzaa Festival, held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

Presented by the Elegba Folklore Society, the festival features live music, dancing, food, vendors and children’s programming. The Kuumba Stage will showcase performances and messages designed to strengthen families and galvanize the community. Attendees can shop a wide array of cultural goods in the Ujamaa Market, and enjoy dishes from across the African diaspora in the Karamu Kitchen. Watoto Kwanzaa offers activities for children, while the Nia Sessions provide cultural connections and guided discussions as part of this widely recognized observance of Kwanzaa.

Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa celebrates African heritage and collective purpose. The Capital City Kwanzaa Festival is one of the largest Kwanzaa celebrations on the East Coast. As Dr. Karenga has observed, “Richmond is a major center for the celebration of Kwanzaa; it is an important site of African American history and culture, and it has been a very welcoming and enjoyable experience for my wife, Tiamoyo, and me.”…
