Great Plains Transportation Museum looking for money for train restoration

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Great Plains Transportation Museum had sent a train to Kansas City to be restored where an additional $50,000 worth of damage was found.

“We sent it off to Kansas City to be restored and when they grit blasted it, it took all the paint off, layers and layers of years of paint, they found a lot of degradation that hadn’t been visible with the paint on,” said Lon Smith, Director at the Great Plains Transportation Museum.

Initially their goal for a new paint job was only $193,000, which they had reached in June 2025 through donations…
