Convicted killer of Canton husband and father sentenced to life again

CANTON ‒ The convicted killer of a Canton husband and father was sentenced to life in prison — again.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank Forchione initially sent Damon Mitchell to prison in March 2024. The judge handed down that sentence after a jury found Mitchell guilty of shooting and killing 55-year-old Steven Troyer and firing a dozen more times at Troyer’s son, Steven A. Troyer.

However, the 5th District Court of Appeals vacated some of it. They sent the matter back to Forchione for a resentencing hearing due to a clerical error. The judge’s original pronounced sentence of between 38 and 43 years to life in prison didn’t completely jive with the court’s formal written journal entry…
