Minnehaha County serves as police in 8 cities

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Eight cities in Minnehaha County don’t need to fund their own police departments because the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office provides that service.

Hartford Mayor Arden Jones said that when the $234,000 for law enforcement coverage is examined in the budget, it’s a noticeable amount. But law enforcement protection is one service a city must provide to residents, Jones said.

And the city’s administrator Teresa Sidel said that $234,000 for 100 weekly hours of coverage is far less expensive than funding their own department.

“You’d need three to four employees…if you consider the (employees), the equipment, the insurance, and the training, there’s a long list of things,” Sidel said cost a city money to pay for its own police department…
