Five engineering students from Nevada have received recognition for their research related to NASA’s space exploration goals. The latest group of Nevada NASA fellowship and scholarship recipients includes students from the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Materials science graduate student Joy Calhoun and mechanical engineering graduate student John Crosby received fellowships. Mechanical engineering senior Liam Bond, electrical engineering senior Calvin Lu, and mechanical engineering graduate student Shani Quinto received scholarships.
The Nevada NASA Space Grant Consortium, led by Research Professor Eric Wilcox, provides financial support to these students. Fellowships offer up to $20,000, and scholarships provide up to $3,000 for the 2025-2026 academic year. This funding supports research projects that align with NASA’s mission and space technology development.
Joy Calhoun is researching 3D-printing and testing metal and ceramic parts for high-powered rocket motors. She uses fused filament fabrication (FFF) to create lightweight components and studies pore patterns in different metals. Her work is supervised by Professor Mano Misra…
