82-year-old man dies after fight with neighbor, 79, in Greenwich Village

GREENWICH VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) — An 82-year-old man died almost a month after he fought with a 79-year-old neighbor on a Manhattan sidewalk back in October, according to police and sources.

Cops responding to the assault found Dean Conover Whetzel, 82, with a cut on the back of the head and a swollen right eye in front of 519 Hudson St. in Greenwich Village at around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, cops said.

Whetzel was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died of his injuries on Nov. 5, according to the NYPD. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide the following day.

The victim lived on West 10th Street in Greenwich Village, about a block from where the suspect, 79-year-old Dana Escoffier, lived on Hudson Street, police said. The men argued before Escoffier allegedly pushed his neighbor to the ground, sources said…
