Student detained after gun found at North Carolina high school

NORTH CAROLINA — A 17-year-old student was detained Tuesday after a loaded firearm was discovered on the campus of Red Springs High School, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

School resource officers seized the .40-caliber handgun following reports from students that a gun was on campus. The student, a 10th-grader, will face a 365-day suspension, in accordance with state law requiring such a penalty for possessing a firearm or destructive device on school property, according to the Public Schools of Robeson County.

“We always encourage students and staff to report any activity that seems suspicious,” said Jessica Sealey, chief communications officer for the district. “We are grateful that no one was harmed and that the weapon was recovered by law enforcement.” She emphasized that student safety remains the district’s top priority…
