Union Gospel Mission breaks ground on new homeless center in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn — Shovels hit the dirt Tuesday as the Union Gospel Mission officially broke ground on a new homeless center that leaders say will nearly double their ability to help men in crisis.

The project will add a new home with eight beds, which the mission says is a 75 percent increase from its current capacity. Director Rev. Jon Rector tells us the mission serves between 30 and 50 men each year, and this expansion means more of them will have a warm and safe place to stay.

Rector says the fundraising goal for the new center is 300 thousand dollars. They are just under the halfway mark, with almost 150 thousand dollars raised or committed. He says support from local businesses has already helped push the project forward…
