Suspected shoplifter hides clothes in back of patrol car to avoid charges from Wildwood business

An Ocklawaha woman was arrested for theft after layering clothes to allegedly steal them from the Gingerich Design Center.

Officers responded to a theft in progress at the Gingerich Design Center, located at 3107 E SR 44, at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. The victim advised that 31-year-old Rose Mary Pasternak was on the second level of the store, layering clothes underneath her own.

Once there, officers found Pasternak wearing multiple layers of clothing. One of them asked her if she could step outside to talk, and she agreed before asking if she could use the bathroom. She was told she could not use the bathroom, however, she tried to turn back into the store, the report said.

The officers instructed her to keep walking to a patrol vehicle on the west side of the building. While escorting her there, they saw her try to approach her husband, who was painting at the business. She was ultimately detained in handcuffs so some of the clothes could be given back to the store, including a $24 maroon romper and $28 distressed flare jeans, the report said…
