Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are granting $1.25 million to Under 1 Roof, a Dallas-based nonprofit serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The organization is one of 32 nonprofits across the country selected for funding this year by the family’s Bezos Day 1 Families Fund, now in its eighth year. Since its inception, it has awarded $850 million across 280 grants.
Founded in 2011 by Verna Jones, Under 1 Roof supports families in Dallas and Collin counties and operates with an annual budget of $4.9 million. Before this award, its largest foundation gift was a $50,000 grant from Wells Fargo. The new funding, Jones says, will be deployed over five years to significantly expand the organization’s reach and capacity.
“This grant is going to have a major impact because so many families are living in their cars or bouncing between shelters and just need a place to stay,” Jones said. “With these funds, we can help them on day one—get them out of their vehicles, meet their basic needs, and guide them toward stability…
