Renew Jordan Creek project passes halfway mark

The Renew Jordan Creek daylighting project is officially past its midpoint, city officials say, with major excavation and structural work now substantially complete. As the project shifts into its next phase, significant traffic changes are expected to ripple through downtown.

Progress to date

According to the city’s construction team, crews have finished most of the heavy earthwork required to carve out the open, naturalized creek channel. Retaining walls are in place, key utilities have been relocated and structural components like the new concrete arch bridge over Campbell Avenue are already rising.

“The city’s construction manager, Branco, has made excellent progress so far despite some real challenges dealing with wet weather this past spring,” said Public Works Project Manager Kirkland Preston in an interview with KY3.

Traffic shifts

The week of Oct. 20, Campbell Avenue, which had been closed since April, reopened between Water and Mill streets, though with just one lane.

At the same time, Boonville Avenue closed between Water and Mill, a change that is expected to last about eight months, according to the Renew Jordan Creek website. Drivers will need to use detours: northbound traffic is rerouted via Olive Street to Campbell, while southbound traffic goes along Phelps Street to Jefferson…
