TVA awarded $400M grant for cutting-edge nuclear project in Oak Ridge

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Valley Authority has been awarded a $400 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy to speed up the development of the country’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at the TVA’s Clinch River nuclear site in East Tennessee.

According to the utility provider, the TVA is the first company in the U.S. to have a construction permit application for the BWRX-300 SMR accepted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The project developing the the GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 SMR, which is a generation III+ SMR, will serve as a national model and demonstrate how advanced nuclear generation can deliver reliable and affordable energy at scale.
