Toledo Police choose education over incarceration in opioid crisis

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) — Toledo Police are taking an educational approach to combat the opioid epidemic, choosing to work with mental health agencies rather than focusing solely on arrests.

Deputy Chief Joe Heffernan said fighting the opioid crisis is about education, not incarceration. His officers work with mental health agencies like New Concepts to spread awareness about the dangers of drug use.

“Trying to get the word out about how dangerous these drugs are. You’ll see a lot of billboards around that say one pill can kill,” Heffernan said…
