FEDERAL HILL (WBFF) — A year after it was completed without any of the city-required documentation, a Jewish community center in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood had its request for building variances rejected Tuesday by the Baltimore Municipal Zoning and Appeals Board.
Federal Hill residents testified against proposed zoning variances for Chabad of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, which is also known as Sobo Synagogue — a community center for Jewish students at the university — that they say popped up to host large gatherings without obtaining proper approval from the city.
The property was erected in the backyard of 50 E. Montgomery St. in November 2024. Its owners received cease-work orders from the city during construction, but work continued on the structure that now appears to be permanent and is listed on Google Maps…
