BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Drivers across New York State will see new changes to the traffic violation point system beginning in early 2026, including stricter license suspension rules.
A driver’s license is currently subject to suspension if 11 points are accrued over a span of 18 months. New rules will change that threshold, suspending or revoking a license if 10 points are accrued within 24 months.
Under the revised system, several traffic violations will carry heavier penalties. Speeding in a work zone will increase to eight points, speeding up to 10 miles per hour over the limit will rise to four points, and passing a stopped school bus will jump from five to eight points.
