Join Charlottesville Tomorrow as an IT Operations and Security Lead

Charlottesville Tomorrow is strengthening its technology infrastructure and seeks an experienced IT contractor passionate about supporting mission-driven organizations. This contractor will work with our product and operations teams to optimize our systems, improve security and build sustainable technical foundations.

This IT contractor will report to our Director of Product and Technology and serve as a trusted advisor on infrastructure decisions, security protocols, and technical operations. We are seeking a technically skilled professional who can work both strategically (advising on best practices) and tactically (implementing solutions), with particular strengths in cloud infrastructure, security and systems administration. This role requires regular newsroom presence to support digital safety initiatives and hands-on technical needs.

Here’s some of what the IT contractor will do

Initial setup priorities:

  • Audit and optimize resources, identify and eliminate unused/redundant services
  • Lead software migrations to increase digital security
  • Implement comprehensive backup security protocols across systems
  • Review and configure permissions for appropriate access controls
  • Establish an automated backup system for the newsroom shared drives
  • Review and optimize employee access tracking systems
  • Configure software settings for security and compliance

Digital safety and security support:

  • Act as technical advisor for newsroom digital safety initiatives
  • Provide guidance to staff on device security, account protection and safe digital practices
  • Support two-factor authentication setup and troubleshooting across platforms

Ongoing advisory and support:

  • Maintain regular newsroom presence (in-person office hours or scheduled availability) for hands-on technical support
  • Advise on infrastructure decisions as organization scales
  • Conduct periodic security audits and recommend improvements
  • Support onboarding and offboarding from technical systems perspective
  • Document processes and create guides for internal team
  • Stay informed about emerging security threats and recommend preventive measures
  • Assist with vendor evaluation and technical procurement decisions
