LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A proposed data center at S. Cedar Street and Kalamazoo Street did not receive approval for a conditional rezoning at a meeting of the Lansing Planning Commission Tuesday night.
On a 4-3 vote, Planning Commission members voted not to recommend a conditional rezoning request that would allow the data center development to begin. The Lansing City Council will likely review the proposal in the beginning of 2026 and will have the final say as to if the property will be rezoned.
Commissioners did vote 5-2 in favor of selling the property to Deep Green for $1.4 million. That decision will also go to Council for a final decision at the beginning of the year.
Deep Green has proposed building a data center on property currently used as parking lots by the city. The company would invest an estimated $120 million to building the facility. In addition, the facility will recirculate water used to cool the technology for the data center through the Lansing Board of Water and Light. BWL will then use that heated water to heat businesses and homes in downtown Lansing that rely on steam and hot water from the utility for warmth…
