Chicago police say a Chicago Heights man provided a burglary plot twist that would make even seasoned criminals think twice. After a crew smashed their way into two GameStop stores in September, prosecutors say, Jabari Jones-Cooper skipped the stores entirely and stole the GameStop loot from CPD’s auto pound, where the merchandise was sitting in the burglars’ recovered getaway car.
The Nissan Rogue was one of two SUVs used during back-to-back GameStop smash-and-grabs early on September 5. Police said a crew rammed into the South Loop GameStop at 1252 South Canal Street around 3:45 a.m. and fled with merchandise. About an hour later, the same group burglarized another GameStop at 5835 South Kedzie Avenue in Gage Park.
Officers recovered the stolen Rogue later that day and brought it to the pound at 10301 South Doty Avenue for processing, leaving the merchandise inside as evidence.
Prosecutors now say that Jones-Cooper, 32, slipped into the pound within hours of the vehicle’s arrival and took the GameStop merchandise from the seized SUV. A police report estimated the gaming products were worth $8,000…
