Lowcountry family gets keys to new home through local nonprofit in Ravenel

RAVENEL, S.C. (WCSC) — A Lowcountry family is starting a fresh chapter today, stepping into a home of their own thanks to the efforts of Sea Island Habitat for Humanity.

If you knocked on this Ravenel home yesterday, nobody would have answered. But a mother, Regina Wescott, and her two children are moving in — and she owns the home without paying a single cent upfront.

Regina spent the last eight months volunteering at the construction site of her own home, contributing 50 hours of “sweat equity” — the nonprofit’s requirement for prospective homeowners. Unlike traditional homeownership, families in the program don’t have to cover construction costs, down payments, or closing fees. Their only responsibility is an affordable mortgage, which goes back into helping build homes for the next family in line…
