Campbell and McCluskie plead guilty in scheme involving Becerra’s dormant campaign funds

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Greg Campbell and Sean McCluskie have both pleaded guilty in federal court in connection to a scheme that funneled money from a dormant campaign account for personal use, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.

Federal prosecutors said they siphoned funds from a dormant campaign account belonging to former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

According to court documents, Campbell, a lobbyist, and McCluskie, who served as Becerra’s chief of staff at the time, conspired with Dana Williamson, Governor Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff, to funnel the money through various business entities for McCluskie’s personal use between February 2022 and September 2024…
