Tampa DUI suspect winds up long way from home on I-75 in Sumter County

A Tampa woman suspected of driving under the influence was arrested a long way from home when she was busted on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

A deputy patrolling near the intersection of the I-75 northbound ramp in Lake Panasoffkee noticed 39-year-old Tanya Marie Heflin behind him in a red car around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle followed him too closely with its headlights and left turn signal on, and as he continued, it flashed its high beams at him.

Seeing this, he let Heflin drive past him so he could get behind her. He tried to stop her by turning on emergency lights, but she went forward onto the I-75 ramp. He watched as she got within 2 or 3 inches of a semi-truck before finally coming to a stop at the end of the ramp, the report said.

Several deputies approached Heflin’s vehicle, ordering her to roll up her windows due to an aggressive dog and step out of the vehicle. She did not listen at first and rolled up her back windows only when they repeated their instructions. It took multiple commands for her to get out of the vehicle, the report said…
