11-week-old makes history as youngest patient in Arkansas to get bilateral cochlear implant surgery

RISON, Ark. – For Katelyn and Justin Hargrave, hearing a diagnosis for their four-week-old daughter Kennedy was just the start of a long battle to recovery.

“It was a very rare form of meningitis. That comes from contaminated water. And we to this day have no idea how she got it,” Katelyn said.

When Kennedy was 11 weeks old, her doctor at Arkansas Children’s Hospital said the best option to restore her hearing was to perform cochlear implant surgery in both ears. This makes her the youngest in Arkansas to have the surgery.
