City transportation leaders take up this year’s traffic signal priority list

The city of Madison’s Transportation Commission adopts a traffic signal priority list each year, identifying intersections that could benefit from a traffic light. In a typical year, Traffic Engineer Jerry Schippa said Wednesday, they’ll come to the commission with fifteen to twenty intersections that warrant further study. But this year, they’re requesting just four.

Schippa explained how they narrow down the list.

“Every year we update any intersection on the list, so it’s kind of a rolling list. Once an intersection goes on, it will stay on that list until the intersection control changes. We will update every intersection on that list for crash data. We’ll take a look at how many, what we consider correctable crashes that a traffic signal might correct at every intersection,” Schippa said. “If anything jumps out at us then, then we typically take a deeper look.”…
