Governor Polis visits schools in Colorado Springs, Fort Carson

(COLORADO SPRINGS/FORT CARSON, Colo.) — On Thursday, Dec. 4, Colorado Governor Jared Polis made the trek down to Southern Colorado to speak and support schools in Colorado Springs and Fort Carson.

His first stop of the day was at Jenkins Middle School in Colorado Springs. The school was one of 27 that were awarded the designation of a Purple Star School for its work to support students who come from families with a military background.

“What that means is just, kids who move to the area, sometimes even mid-year, don’t know anybody, don’t have friends. Their parents, obviously great patriots working on behalf of their country, and schools like Jenkins, where about 20% of the parents are military, really, really help kids with their transition. They do special events that bring people together, help kids form friends in the social network, [and give them] what they need to succeed in school.”

Gov. Polis also joined education leaders at New Abrams Elementary School on Fort Carson to celebrate the opening of the new state-of-the-art institution. The new school touts 80,000 square feet, which will be able to accommodate up to 650 pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The building will also feature digital smart boards in every classroom, a Creatives Learning STEAM lab, and outdoor teaching spaces. New Abrams will also include advanced access control and enhanced security features.

The governor also visited Pueblo to visit PexPeppers, a local small business, and FOX21 News will provide more details on that visit in additional coverage by Reporter Michelle Wells on Thursday.
