Eugene Police: Man Arrested For Eluding Officers, Had Pipe Bomb

EUGENE, OR – A Eugene man wanted by police was arrested late Tuesday night after he was allegedly found him sitting in a vehicle with what turned out to be a pipe bomb.

According to the Eugene Police Department, two officers went to an apartment in the 2700 block of Willakenzie Road at 10:39 p.m. on December 3rd to arrest 43-year-old Melvin David Bennett, who was suspected of fleeing an earlier traffic stop. Police say Bennett had sped off from an EPD officer at 7th Avenue and Lincoln Street, prompting multiple agencies to search for his vehicle after it reportedly left the city. The vehicle wasn’t found, but investigators identified Bennett as the suspect.

When officers arrived at Bennett’s apartment, they say he was spotted him sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. Police positioned their patrol cars to prevent him from escaping, and he was detained without incident…
