BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has ended its investigation into the fatal police shooting of Jamal Williams after Birmingham police opted to release bodycam footage of the shooting Wednesday.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett released the footage during a news conference where he cited a need to be transparent with residents of the city. Pickett described the events leading up to the shooting and shared both surveillance video of the minutes before the shooting and bodycam of the shooting itself.
In the bodycam camera footage, one person can be heard stating “he got a gun in the back” as officers move to confront Jamel Williams. As officers approached Williams can be seen pulling what police said is a gun from the front pocket of his hoodie, where he was then shot by an unidentified officer.
