Environmental groups push back as Baltimore seeks 16-year delay on sewer upgrades

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Environmental advocates are urging Baltimore officials not to postpone critical sewer system upgrades after a series of recent sewage overflows, including a spill last month that sent more than 1.7 million gallons of raw sewage into the Jones Falls.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and Blue Water Baltimore this week called on the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW), the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adhere to the original 2030 deadline for completing extensive repairs to the city’s aging wastewater system.

City officials, however, are proposing to extend that deadline to 2046—16 years later—citing concerns about the cost of the remaining work and the burden it could place on ratepayers…
