MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – In the last year, at least 12 inmates at Mobile County Metro Jail have been charged with indecent exposure, a crackdown prompted by a federal lawsuit.
The Justice Department sued the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office in 2021, alleging that the department failed to protect female corrections officers from sexual harassment by prisoners. A settlement required the department to take more aggressive action.
“Those corrections officers in that jail have probably one of the hardest jobs in all law enforcement,” Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said. “You’re locked in there with inmates 24 hours a day. And so, we tried to do everything we can to make the environment as best it can be, you know, while they’re there.”…
