Tennessee AG opposes new ‘University Participation Agreement’ for college sports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has written a letter opposing a new “University Participation Agreement” distributed to Division I schools by the College Sports Commission, or CSC, warning that its terms could conflict with state law and expose universities to broad penalties.

The 11-page agreement, according to the Associated Press, outlines the CSC’s enforcement structure. It requires participating schools to waive their right to sue the CSC, accept mandatory arbitration, and comply with new compensation and roster-management rules. All 68 Power Four schools have been asked to sign it by Dec. 3.

Under the proposed framework, the CSC could impose postseason bans or strip conference revenue if an institution, or certain third parties tied to that institution, bring litigation related to CSC rules or investigations.
