Pilot ejects before F-16 Thunderbird crashes in California

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – An F-16 Thunderbird fighter jet from Nellis Air Force Base crashed near China Lake in San Bernardino County, California, on Wednesday, according to the county’s fire department and U.S. Air Force officials.

The USAF Thunderbirds confirmed on social media that the pilot ejected safely and is receiving follow-on care. The plane that crashed was an F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft that was on a training mission over controlled airspace in California, according to the Thunderbirds.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, crews said around 12 p.m. PT that they were responding to a reported aircraft emergency near the San Bernardino-Inyo County line.

Fire officials added that the public should avoid the immediate area but that there is no threat to the surrounding community…
