Tampa turns to backup water supply in rare measure as drought deepens

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — City officials say the Hillsborough River never recovered from an exceptionally dry summer. Much of the rainfall Tampa did receive this year fell outside the watershed areas that feed the river, preventing water levels from recharging before dry season began.

“We also just really didn’t get a lot of rainfall,” said Sarah Burns, water planning manager for Tampa’s Water Department.

She added that the lack of rain in key areas left Tampa entering the dry season with a 13-inch rainfall deficit.

“Normally we have 13 additional inches of rainfall prior to entering the dry season,” Burns said…
