In a news release from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, Dr. Steven W. Powell admitted to submitting false and fraudulent claims to Medicare for durable medical equipment worth more than $1.9 million. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that Powell agreed to electronically sign orders for durable medical equipment (DME), such as knee and ankle braces, that he knew were used to submit false and fraudulent claims to Medicare.
Powell received kickbacks in exchange for each doctor’s order he signed authorizing DME that was not medically necessary or legitimately prescribed. He pleaded guilty in May 2023.
During a board meeting held on Friday, a consent order was issued revoking Powell’s right to renew his medical license after he was convicted of Health Care Fraud and disciplined by the Kansas and Missouri Medical Boards for similar reasons.
