Hola Arepa in Minneapolis is sharing tips with other restaurants after it was visited by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this week, when fears are especially heightened among the local Latino and Somali communities.
Two ICE agents entered the Latin street food eatery on Nicollet Avenue during dinner service on Wednesday and were refused access to the kitchen by general manager Naomi Rathke since they were unable to present a signed judicial warrant, which is required for immigration officers attempting to arrest someone in a private business or home. The agents left without detaining anyone.
Hola Arepa posted this on social media late Thursday: “We had an ICE scare yesterday and even though we’re afraid of the repercussions of being vocal, we feel that it’s also important to inform people that this is right at our front door. ICE is not some far away boogeyman. They are here right now, spreading fear in our community.”…
